Hi All
Well, bar the odd friendly match here and there, we have once again come to the end of another footballing season.
And what a season it has been, on and off the pitch.
Since my last update, we have had yet more GFC champions. More on that in a second. But in my eyes, everyone at this club is a winner. Whilst it is obviously marvelous to end up with some silverware, success comes in so many shapes and forms. Simply being a team, working together, enjoying together, is success. Feeling part of something special. Developing as a player and a person. These are all massive successes and it is exactly what I believe our club is about.
But it is not just on the pitch, as I say. We are making huge strides in the development of the club. Again, more about that in a second.
Anyway, here goes
More Champions
Yes, our winners just keep coming.
To start with, huge congratulations to our Under 16’s boys team, who are league champions. Massive well done to coaches Craig Taylor, Nick Bailey, the players and parents. A little quote from Craig.
“After both Greetland and Lindley teams were close to folding at Under 14’s, we joined forces for the Under 15’s season and were runners up in the league. This year, one step further and claimed top place. The phoenix has certainly risen from the ashes.”
Then, we also had league winners at Under 14’s level, with the Stars team taking the title with one match to spare. Again, huge congratulations to Sean Morland and the team. Nine years of hard work, 2 years as runners up, the title has finally landed in Greetland.
But we don’t just win league titles. Our under 14’s boys Gold team were sensational winners in their cup final, winning 4-3. In a roller coaster of a match, Greetland conceded a late equaliser before scoring the winner with only 2 minutes remaining. What a performance!
And it’s not just our younger footballers who are taking all the success. Huge congratulations to Sam Duffy and our open age team, who have won their respective league which catapults them to the top league in Yorkshire Amateur football. What a season they have had, following on from their title winning season last year.
A final word on our Under 17’s team, led by Gareth Ewing. Having gone 21 league matches undefeated in Division 2 (high standard league and no mean feat), the final match was last Sunday. Remarkably, West End were also undefeated in the league. Either could have taken the title on the last day and sadly, Greetland lost their final match. But a simply superb season from our 17’s and one to be proud of.
Date for the Diary – Saturday 15th July
Our annual club open day will be on the 15th July. Emphasis will be on bringing as many of the Greetland family together as possible, with open training sessions on the fields being the core part of the day. Let’s face it, it doesn’t matter if our players are 6 or 16, all they want to do is play football. Therefore, we have decided to do just that. We will ensure we have as many teams on the pitch as possible (we will probably have an element of staggering the times considering the volume of teams and overall capacity) followed by at 3pm an open age inter club friendly match with food and drinks available throughout the day.
Anyway, more information to follow.
Pitch Maintenance
As previously shared, we will be shutting down our pitches come the end of the month, in order that we can start our general maintenance. We are determined to put the necessary steps in place to ensure the quality of our pitches throughout season 23/24 is the best it can be. This requires work and funding. We are committed to both. We simply want our players to play on the best surface they can and again, we are committed to doing the right thing. Lots of plans afoot.
Girl’s Football
You may have seen our call to arms to all female footballers to join us at Brooksbank School? Well, on Thursday 11th May, we had an amazing number of girls turn up for the first session. A marvelous turnout and lots of smiles on faces. Well done to Luke Whitworth and some budding young coaches from our Under 15s girls team for hosting the session. I sense this will only grow and grow.
Budding Goalkeepers
It was wonderful to see over 40 of our budding goalies attend the first of the coaching sessions, delivered by our very own John Greenwood. These sessions have been funded by the club and have resulted as part of the prospering relationship with the Mark Duffy Football School. Another growth area for our club.
Think that is all for now. Thank you to everyone who has made this season the most successful one in living memory. Players, coaches, volunteers, parents. Everyone involved has played their part. It’s not easy, getting up early on a Sunday morning for a 9.30 kick off in Ossett. Or trying to balance different matches at different times. But each season, you deliver. You put smiles on the faces of our young (and older) footballers.
Thank you for everything you do.
